NLFL Holds Lunch and Learn on Mental Health Issues in the WorkplaceMonday, November 16th 2015
The Education Committee of the NLFL recently sponsored a lunch and learn session dealing with mental health issues in the workplace. The session, lead by the Canadian Mental Health Association - NL (CMHA-NL) was extremely well recieved, highly informative and addressed a very important issue that impacts workers and workplaces. One of the key pillars of an equal and equitable society is public education. It plays a major role in reducing poverty, improving physical and mental health, reducing inequality of all forms and increasing participation in the democratic process. NLFL Presents To The Fracking Review Panel In Corner BrookThursday, October 22nd 2015
The NLFL has several concerns about the impact of fracking in the province. With an issue of this magnitude, with so many documented environmental concerns and positions, any panel tasked with listening to what the people of the Province have to say needs to come from an area of knowledge, expertise and experience in areas that will most certainly be impacted. NLFL Dismayed by Workplace NL Decision to Reduce Assessment RatesThursday, October 15th 2015
On October 14th, Workplace NL announced average assessment rates for employers, to cover workplace injuries, are to be reduced by $0.25 per $100 of assessable payroll. According to Workplace NL, this lower assessment rate is due to record low injury rates. Mary Shortall, President of NLFL, expressed extreme disappointment in the announcement, believing that the decision will result in a loss of millions of dollars of money that could be better spent on improving workplace safety and serving the 13,000 injured workers who are forced to rely on workers compensation for their day-to-day living. you can read the press release here.
